19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hard surfaces

A resurgent Medvedev claimed his first championship for nearly 30 months with success over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.

Medvedev, a ex- top-ranked player, has had a torrid season, winning just a single victory at the Grand Slams and suffering a meltdown at the American major.

His varied form on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his service game in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.

Now collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually advanced in the last few weeks - culminating in a hard-fought competitive victory over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

It is Medvedev's first trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hardcourt after March of that year.

The win also means he has secured 21 victories at 21 different events.

"It's the first time I have attended a event with my children together, so to get a trophy is really nice," commented tennis professional Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I got when my first daughter her name was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six finals, comprising in the German tournament in the past months.

Medvedev's counter-punching strategy and recurring outbursts on the playing surface had led commentators to doubt if his skill to play at the highest level was concluded.

But the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the past month, striving to come to the net and compete aggressively, backed up by an improved serving game.

The champion came back from a deficit in the initial set against the difficult Moutet, securing 4 of the final five exchanges to take the lead.

The competitors exchanged service breaks in the middle set before the challenger, striving for his initial professional championship, seized the initiative to force a decider.

He defended four early-game opportunities in a tight third set before the champion won the break to 15 to secure the win.

Fittingly, Medvedev secured the title with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to control a return after a lengthy match.
