EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
